What qualifies as a dental emergency?
A dental emergency includes any issue that requires immediate care to stop bleeding, relieve severe pain, or save a tooth. Common examples include knocked-out teeth, cracked or broken teeth, facial swelling, dental abscesses, and injuries causing bleeding that won’t stop. Severe toothaches or infections that interfere with eating, sleeping, or daily activity are also considered emergencies. If you're unsure, it's always best to contact your dentist—prompt care can often prevent more serious complications.
When is facial swelling considered a dental emergency?
Facial swelling, particularly when accompanied by a toothache or fever, is a dental emergency. It can indicate the spread of infection from a tooth or gum area into surrounding tissues. In some cases, this can become serious if left untreated. Prompt dental care is essential to control the infection and prevent complications. If swelling occurs, don’t wait for it to go away—contact a dental professional immediately, even after hours.
Quick Action
Knocked-Out Teeth First Aid
If a tooth is completely knocked out, prompt first aid can significantly improve the chance of saving it. First, find the tooth and hold it by the crown only—never the root. If it’s dirty, rinse gently with water for just a few seconds. Avoid excessive cleaning, which can damage important tissue.
If possible, reposition the tooth in the socket. If that’s not feasible, place it in milk, saline, contact lens solution, or tuck it inside the cheek. Seek dental help immediately—ideally within 1 to 2 hours—for the best chance of successful replantation.

Facial Swelling & Infections
Facial or jaw swelling linked to a toothache or infection is a serious concern that should never be ignored. Swelling often signals the spread of infection, which can affect nearby tissues and even general health. If you notice facial swelling, persistent pain, or signs of infection, contact a dentist immediately.
Prompt treatment can help prevent complications and relieve discomfort. At New Horizons Dental, we respond quickly to emergency cases and will guide you on what steps to take, even outside regular hours.
